Charter School 101: How Are Charter Schools Funded?

Many people don’t see how dropouts in large cities have anything to do with their own lives. They feel protected against the problems with schools in other areas and don’t believe that failing schools can have any impact on their own well being or safety. It reminds me of the ostrich with his head in the sand. If nothing else, you’d think people would understand that increased crime rates increase the tax money spent to jail criminals.

The Democrats have done the “correct” thing in every election since they lost the south to the Christians: They’ve ignored the non-believers and progressives completely because there was no political benefit in paying attention to them.

A movement has arisen in response, called No Child Left Inside; the allusion to education reform is no accident. Since then, experts have testified to Congress. Officials have passed resolutions, and shepherded national and state bills through the halls of government. Websites, books, organizations, coalitions and operations are out there. Now, what can you do?

To save the souls of our schools, administrators must truly “minister” or in other words, assist all in the building. As instructional leaders of our schools, they cannot function in isolation nor allow teachers to do so as well. When a principal cares about the success of teachers and students, his/her presence does not evoke fear.

The So what? The ‘so-what’ is that the lowest SAT for admittance to the University of Illinois is 1610. 1277 ain’t cutting it. The universal reaction from elected black officials, apologetic black educators, and guilt-ridden black parents, or more realistically, single mothers is: Racism. They declare the SAT is biased. You know what? It probably is. It is biased toward students who can read and write well and who take an algebra class before they have a child out of wedlock. But then colleges, grad schools, and corporations are biased as well. Life is biased, job competition is intense, get over it.

We were outspent 10-2. The Democrats spent approximately M on Senator Wilhelmi’s campaign. The last two months of the campaign he bought 18 cable stations, all day parts. Not only were we unable to respond to his misleading ads, we were unable to promote our message. He also had mailers going out almost daily.

The Democrats knew this, and they had to pick their battles. They had to decide: Which platforms will maintain our current voting block while enticing the undecided middle? The answer was obvious. They could ignore the atheists and progressives and move farther to the right to entice borderline conservatives. Clinton did this brilliantly, and Obama continued the trend. The Democrats understood that the vast majority of progressives and non-believers in america would continue to vote for them regardless of how far right they moved for the simple reason that voting for the Christian Right Party would be inconceivable, and voting third party is the mathematical equivalent of voting for the Right.

Some will say education change can’t be done. When Neil Armstrong took the first step for man onto the moon, he could not have done so without the united team of innovative professionals who made the space voyage possible. It is the same for the giant leap for mankind which we need to make in education for future American generations. We need a team of innovative leaders with tunnel vision to block out the pessimists.

Reading difficulty often leads to school failure. A recently-released study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that one in six children who are not reading proficiently in third grade do not graduate from high school on time, a rate four times greater than proficient readers.

Back in the day, even teachers children attended the same schools. Teachers were icons in the community. We saw them at the grocery stores and downtown. We need to focus more on community as we move to education reform.

The Democrats have done the “correct” thing in every election since they lost the south to the Christians: They’ve ignored the non-believers and progressives completely because there was no political benefit in paying attention to them.

Michael Steele, the chair for the RNC had some great words over the weekend, I like him so much more when he is himself and not this psuedo cool hip dude.

And a big congrats to my friends at Hoosier Access and Capitol & Washington. They, along with Indiana Barrister, made the washington Post’s list of best state political blogs in the country. Indiana Barrister also made the list back in 2009.

When some spacecrafts have mechanical trouble, does it mean that the naysayers were correct and that man had never had a successful space exploration?–Of course not. When something goes terribly wrong with one particular journey, it does not revoke the successes prior and future. We can and should learn for such circumstance, so they don’t reoccur. But should man shelf all future exploration due to a few failed attempts?

In order to win the money, the states must show a plan for the money. There is an application process and it is not as easy as it sounds. States hoping to win the money go through a rigorous process. Part of that process is to ensure that the money goes to what it is intended for, helping the children of that state obtain a stellar education.

The current child poverty rate in Kansas approaches 20%, and is growing at a rate nearly double the national average. In 2010, about 40% of Kansas’ K-12 students – nearly 200,000 kids – qualified for Federal free/reduced lunch programs.

My students grow up in the same town I did, but in very different worlds. Many have never been to the KU Natural History Museum, and some don’t even know it exists. I know their parents love them and want what’s best for them. But it’s hard to take your kids to a museum if you have to work two or three jobs just to feed them.

Public schools are just that – public. By law, public schools must teach every student who walks through the door. Public school students are representative of the communities the schools serve.

Now, those unconstitutional fees parents pay to their local school, they’ve decreased, or better yet, have been eliminated. Oh, wait, no they haven’t. Superintendent Stevenson has stopped purchasing high end entertainment for herself and her best friends. Oh, wait, no she hasn’t. Student achievement has become a serious conversation. Oh, wait, no it hasn’t. Enrollment is increasing. Oh wait, no it isn’t, but costs certainly are increasing. The district has had a meaningful evaluation for efficiency in spending. Nope, that hasn’t happened either.

It shouldn’t have to be this way. With this system, the opportunity to succeed can be whisked away from a child before she even sets foot in a school.

You are a good example. You drove to work a few days ago. Did you learn anything? Probably not. You did not try to accomplish anything novel. And, nothing novel happened. But, an unexpected highway closure either leads you to turn around and go home or (more likely) do something new. Then, small or large, something will be learned. Maybe you will learn those functions on your GPS that you never needed before. Or, maybe you will ask a very good looking business man for directions and find that all nice looking business men are not necessarily nice. New experiences are very good at emerging a new want. Wants lead to trying. And, trying leads to learning.

But the newspaper got the story only partially right. It was under Ms. Baker’s rein, together with the leadership of Board Chairman Tom Nida, which resulted in D.C.’s charter school movement being an example for the rest of the country to follow regarding education reform.

Regardless, the way forward for the GOP is clear. First, we need to challenge Democrats on their turf. The 43rd was as sure of a win for the Democrats as any. Yet, our campaign forced Senate Dems to make the 43rd a “firewall” district and spend M. The Democrats can’t spend M in every senate district. We need to remove the ability for them to consolidate their efforts in whatever district they choose. If we start a “fire” in every district, no matter the odds of winning, no district can become a “firewall” district. If this party had placed a quality candidate in every district, Bill Brady would be governor.

Caruolo On Ri’s Public Education System: It’s Not That Bad

I wrote about the education of Barak Obama, then a candidate. Let’s now look into Sonya Sotomayor’s education. Like Obama, she does not have a privileged background. Born and raised in the Bronx by immigrant parents, her father dies when she was 9. She goes to Blessed Sacrament School in Soundview, and then to parochial Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx. Just like Obama, Sotomayor is not a product of public school system.

Pick up some litter. In your front yard, in the vacant lot, at school, in the super store parking lot. It makes the place look better, it’s free, good exercise, and shows you care. You could work with the family, make a special project, or just stoop a moment along your daily routine.

A. Give writing tests, interviews, and background checks. Admission to the college of education should be tougher than any department, after all teachers are going to be dealing with CHILDREN – THE FUTURE – OUR FUTURE.

The best approach is to think about others who ARE worse off than you are! Studies show that children are the poorest population in the us. Children need attention, role-models, and heroes. Where can you find them? In schools! Call the school and volunteer. It will only cost you time and caring – assets of which you have plenty.

What if my parents had squashed my budding interest in bugs? What if they had forbid me to listen to rock music? I sure wouldn’t be teaching science and playing heavy-metal guitar to raise money for public education.

What we need is a nationwide, grassroots movement to force education reform. It’s time to be preparing students to be the future leaders of America and we need to be teaching them the needed skills.

We need to wake up people. Take the bull by the horns and make serious changes in our lives. We’ve become stagnant and lazy in our everyday lives. Many of our children run amok and have no resposiblities. They don’t know the value of life and most have no feelings of self-worth. All they think about is where to get the next drink of alcohol or drugs to get high. Their moral attitude is down the drain. Their always looking for the next party so they can try to forget their troubles.
